With a cold start this winter, we're all looking to have the best and most cost efficient heating solutions. Studies conducted by Right House, a subsidiary of Meridian Energy estimate that 35% of an average home gas and electricity bill is spent on heating.
In growing numbers, home owners are opting for heat pumps over other forms of heating as it's fast, effective, more energy efficient and a little easier on the wallet. Heat pumps are a great option as they have an impressive electricity to heat ratio. For every kilowatt of electricity, they omit three kilowatts of heat. They also deliver instant heat and can act as air conditioners, making them excellent multi-function systems for all seasons.
When buying a new system or upgrading your current heat pump, consider the following: Price - What's your budget? What's available in your budget? And what option is the best long-term?
Noise - Check with the manufacturer how noisy the heat pump is. Ask to hear a demo model as a guide.
Location - Will you mount the system on the wall, as a grill in the ceiling or place it on the floor? It's wise to discuss with an experienced salesperson what areas in the home are best. If they're not sure, ask to speak to their contracted installer, or call a private contractor and ask over the phone. Let them know the size of your home and what sort of flooring and insulation you have.
Choose quality brands and check that you have a minimum 5-year warranty on labour and parts. It's important that you think long-term, you may need to invest in a slightly higher priced system, however if it's a reliable system it will serve you and your family for years to come. Check that it has an energy star rating or question the manufacturer on the electricity to heat ratio.
